Mug with handle

We start by making the mug. The clay included in the kit can be split and half of it can be used to make the plate and half for the mug. The clay for the mug should in turn be divided into what will become the mug and the handle. In this video you will learn the clamping technique to make a cup, and then make the handle of the mug using the plaque technique. At the end, you will learn how to attach both parts to create your own mug with handle.

We continue in the following video making the ceramic plate with the plaque technique. It is very simple, you can make any shape you want! It doesn't have to be circular.

Clay Recycle

All the leftover clay can be saved in a plastic bag and you have to add a little water so that it can be reused later. In this video I show you how to do it. Don't squeeze the clay before putting it in the bag! This will avoid moisture getting into all parts of the clay.

Ceramic Painting

Once you have finished creating your ceramic pieces, you have to wait for them to dry a little so that they are at a perfect consistency for painting with engobes. If you are in a hurry, you can dry the pieces a little with a hairdryer. Don't dry them completely! They should only lose a little moisture, so that the piece does not deform when you handle it.

In this video, I show you how to paint ceramics with engobes. If you want the colour to be really flat, you should do 2 or 3 coats of paint. If you want it to be a bit transparent like watercolours, one coat is enough. Between coats, wait for the paint to dry a little.

Keep in mind that the colour of the clay after firing is white, so the colours will stand out much more in the final piece.

Clay Play

You can use the surplus recycled clay to make a little sculpture! You can let your imagination run wild and have fun creating the shape inspired by your hands in contact with the clay. Don't forget that you can make up to 4 ceramic pieces with each kit.

Transport to the Atelier

The pieces are ready for firing and glazing! Congratulations! The pieces are very fragile before firing, so they need to be treated with great care and protected during transport. In this video, I'll show you how to protect the pieces before taking them to my workshop. Don't forget to send me an email to let me know when your pieces will be delivered for firing in my ceramic kiln:

See you on our next ceramic adventure!
